Wok burner (PF13L160) Not Hot Enough

Customer

I noticed my burner is not turning up so high.  I have it on full blast and I can only get a medium flame.  I did leave it out overnight and there might be some rust accumulating, maybe the holes are a little plugged.  It used to run very hot at max output.  What do you think?

Outdoorstirfry

One highly possible reason is that you leave a burner valve in open position when you turn on the tank valve.   The regulator detects a leak and only gives partial pressure out.   To reset the regulator, here is the procedure:

  1. Turn off fully the propane tank top valve – to stop any more gas coming from the tank;
  2. Turn on fully the burner left valve – to let all pressure inside the regulator go out.
  3. Turn off fully both burner left and right valves – to prepare for regulator leak check.
  4. Turn on the propane tank valve – you should hear one click from top of the tank immediately.  Then after 10~30s you should hear another clicking sound from the regulator indicating it is completing its leak check and full pressure is available.  If you don’t hear this second clicking sound, you should do a leak check to see where a leak develops and fix it.
  5. Once you hear the 2nd clicking sound, you can turn on the burner valve to ignite.

We have mentioned this on item #8 on page 3 of the installation guide.

Let me know any further question.

Wow, it works!  Thanks

Hose clamp

Customer (PF13L160EI + Carbon Steel Wok Set):

I open my wok package today.  I was disturbed to see the use of screw-down clamps instead of crimped connection for the propane gas line.  I don’t think this is safe.  Do you know the size of the hose and fittings so I can buy a pre-made hose with crimped-on connectors?  What is the rating of the regulator?

Outdoorstirfry

We can’t do a complete crimped type hose for this stove because of the valve assembly requiring a hose barb connection.    We have a lot of customers using our stove as we make it – screw-down clamped hose.   There is no pre-made hose out on the market that will fit to this stove valve assembly.   We make it to order.

Outdoorstirfry

Some more detail,  the hose has proper press crimped stainless clamp with the regulator.   It is the burner valve side where we have to use a worm type screw-down clamp.   Typical application is that the cook will have to turn on the propane tank valve before using the stove to cook.   If there is any leak from the regulator along the hose path to the burner, the regulator will detect it and will not give full pressure power output.   The cook should be able to smell gas leak as well.   At this point the cook should stop and start diagnosis where the leak is to correct it.

Our manual stove PF13L160 no long uses worm type screw-down clamp.    There will be fewer chances of gas leak.  However if there is a gas leak, replacement cost and fixing it is much costly.

Let me know if this makes you feel better and please let us know any further question.

amazon model?

Inquiry

Which model of your wok burner is on Amazon? Does the amazon one have electronic ignition? Also, can a large wok pan (18 or 22 inch) be used with this burner?  thank you!

Outdoorstirfry

We have PF13L160 and PF13L160EI stoves on amazon.  The PF13L160EI is an electronic ignition one.  They work for 18″ or 22″ wok.   If you use a flat bottom pan, the flame will need to be turned on pretty high.

Inquiry

Thanks. You’re very helpful.  It looks like it’s a little cheaper to buy directly from you than from Amazon.

Can you put a grate on the PF13L160 and grill meat or vegetables directly over the flame, like a normal barbecue? I didn’t see any picture of people using it like a barbecue. Does the 160 or 130 flame go low enough so it doesn’t scorch the food, if using on a grate?

The 160 wok grate looks less stable than the 130 model, which is round. What do you think? Also, what’s the advantage of the 160 over the 130, other than more btu?

Thank you again for your help. Your burners look really good.

Outdoorstirfry

Both PF13L160 and PF13L130 stoves give direct flame, they are really powerful and would burn the food upon contact.   Barbecue flame is usually short, much weaker, only heats up the air and let the air to get into contact with meat.

PF13L160 has quite a few advantages over PF13L130.  It has a 6” burner as compared with a 4” one in PF13L130.  Its wok adapter can sit freely according to the cook side.   Its wind guard will remain cool during cooking.   Its hose has stainless braid.   Its flamer will be more focused and not be as long.

Inquiry:

OK.  I think I’ll get the PF13L160.  A few more questions.

I am wondering if it’s possible to convert to camping propane later (e.g. get an adapter at Home Depot) if I don’t buy the “C” version now? I may find that using a big propane tank is easy enough for camping anyway and decide I don’t need to change it.

Thanks for clarifying about heating the air when barbecuing as opposed to the food directly. The reason I ask about barbecuing is I don’t eat meat and don’t have much use for a big grill, but I like to grill vegetables sometimes. I do it on my charcoal weber, but it’d be nice to have something that’s quicker (not have to wait for charcoals). Could I create a flame barrier to use with low flame to cook vegetables on it?

Finally, the EF13CLP50 looks interesting, perhaps for regular cooking. What’s its main purpose?

Anyway, sorry to ask so many questions. I really appreciate your customer service!

Outdoorstirfry:

We don’t know if Home Depot carries the configurable adapter between tank and bottle.  But you can ask us later if you don’t want to buy the “C” version for now.

You should be able to create similar metal structure to BBQ grill and our stove will be must faster and powerful in heating up the intermediate metal plate.

EF13CLP50 can be interesting at home as a side burner for soup cooking.  If you intend to use it during camping, it would be better to have a wind guard like EF13CLP50WG.

Customer (PF13L160):

Thanks again for all your help. I just ordered it.

I think something like this might work for grilling veggies on it. It’s a cast iron grill, so there’d be no direct flame, but it’d get hot enough for quick grilling. It’s 14 inches, so maybe big enough to sit on top and not interfere with airflow. I could maybe put a grate under it if it wasn’t stable enough on its own. Anyway, I’ll wait to get the burner from you and maybe try this one out. I’ll mostly use my wok with the burner, but doing veggies like this would be a bonus feature. Thanks again!

Outdoorstirfry

We see your order.  Thank you.

In terms of the grilling griddle you pick, let us know how it sits on PF13L160.  Since the griddle has curves on both sides, we don’t know if it sits steady enough.

We will provide tracking information once it ships.

Not stable during tossing

Customer (PF13L160):

Thanks for the guide. I noticed that the legs are stable enough for normal cooking but wobbles when rapidly tossing food. I’m thinking that it can be much more stable if the legs are bolted to a metal triangular plate and a weight like a propane tank is placed on the plate. Have you tried that?

Outdoorstirfry

You have very good thought.  Making a plate holding the tank is a very good idea.   We did not try it out but we are sure it should help to stabilize when tossing.   Making a plate like what you describe requires welding.   A simpler way is to tie 3 strings from the long leg adapters (next to the stove base plate) to the tank to lift the tank up a bit, or hang some heavy weight like bricks from the strings.   We don’t offer these as shipping charge of these does not make sense.

Send me a link to a correct regulator that I can purchase for PF13L160

Customer (PF13L160):

If possible, would you be able to send me a link to a correct regulator that I can purchase, just in case?  I don’t want to get the wrong one if I have to pick one up.

Outdoorstirfry

We don’t have it as a separate item for sale.   The closest one is our 0-30PSI adjustable regulator at this link https://outdoorstirfry.com/?page_id=338#0-30Regulator.   This will require customer to find a ¼” MPT x 3/8” hose barb fitting at its output port in order to mate with the hose.

Typically we support our products as much as we can.  Most convenient way is still to ask us for help.

Refurnbished wind guard and pilot light.

Customer (Refurbished PF13L160):

We used the stove for the first time yesterday and it was amazing! We have a lot to learn but the first dishes to come out of the wok were surprisingly good. We found an old wok at the house and a big wok in the storage room for our restaurants.
The heat from cooking cracked a few of the welds but the stove works fine. I will keep an eye on the cracks and let you know if it gets worse. No need to replace it at this point.
Is there a secret to keeping the pilot light lit? The pilot flame goes away each time I shut the oven gas off. I tried low, medium and high pressure on the pilot side and it always goes out. You can hear the pilot gas but the flame disappears the minute the oven ring shuts off…

Outdoorstirfry:

Glad that you were able to find a nice wok.
I believe some of those weld points cracked even before we shipped to you.   We did the repairs and paint.  When we prepared to ship, we noticed those cracks but they did not affect the holdup of the wind guard.  So we just shipped to you.   There should not be a worry because other weld points are strong.
About the pilot,  You would want to hold its flame low during cooking.   Another trick is when you turn off the main burner, turn it off slowly (not in a sudden).   This helps most of the gas inside the burner to be consumed by the main burner and not to create a too much a disturbance to the pilot light.   Also turn the air/fuel mixer wheel more toward the burner can help as well.
Let us know if you have any questions.
